Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bishnupur, hosted by the Utlou Joint Farming-cum-Pisciculture Cooperative Society Ltd., serves as the district-level frontline agricultural science centre under the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). Established in 2003, KVK Bishnupur stands as a vital link between scientific research and grassroots farming, bringing innovation and sustainability to the heart of rural Manipur.
Manipur, known for its rich biodiversity and strong agricultural heritage, provides a fertile ground for integrating traditional wisdom with modern science. Within this landscape, Bishnupur district holds a distinctive position nestled around the picturesque Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. Its unique ecosystem, comprising fertile paddy plains, wetlands, and foothill zones, supports a highly diversified farming system integrating rice, fish, poultry, piggery, and horticultural crops.
KVK Bishnupur leverages these natural advantages to promote climate-resilient, resource efficient, and integrated farming models suited to local conditions. Operating on 25 hectares of land, the KVK is equipped with demonstration farms, crop fields, water harvesting units, and training infrastructure. Supported by a multidisciplinary team of 16 staff members, including Subject Matter Specialists in agronomy, horticulture, fisheries, animal science, soil science, home science, and agricultural extension, the centre serves as a bridge between scientific research and field-level application.
The centre’s major focus areas include sustainable rice cultivation, integrated rice–fish farming, high-value vegetable and fruit production, biofertilizer use, composting, and value addition of local produce. It also emphasizes women empowerment, youth entrepreneurship, and skill development, helping transform traditional farmers into modern agripreneurs.
Situated within the dynamic Loktak Lake basin, KVK Bishnupur continues to uphold its mission of advancing scientific farming practices, conserving local resources, and fostering inclusive growth for the farming community of Bishnupur and beyond.
